Summary:
Annotation This conference focussed on the status of nuclear physics as we approach the millennium. Among the main topics addressed were (1) the exploration of the limits of existence of nuclei in terms of the number of protons & /or neutrons they can contain & the combinations of neutrons & protons which can exist, (2) recent progress in exploring the properties of nuclei under extreme conditions of rotation & temperature, (3) nuclear reaction mechanisms & nuclear reactions as a tool to reach exotic nuclei, (4) nuclear reactions with radioactive beams, (5) impact of nuclear physics in astrophysics, (6) applications of very sensitive nuclear techniques to measuring tiny effects in our environment, the composition & nature of materials, dating archeological artefacts, (7) applications to medicine such as tumor therapy & to the transmutation of nuclear waste.
