Původní text publikovali anatomové z Lékařské fakulty Karlovy univerzity v Plzni Jaroslav Kos, Jiří Heřt a Jaroslava Hladíková v roce 1964. Tato publikace byla významná především tím, že představovala první českou poválečnou učebnici topografické anatomie podle Weignera. První vydání mělo mezi studenty i lékaři obrovský úspěch, protože topografie celého těla byla popsána stručně a srozumitelně. Všechna další vydání tohoto textu byla díky velké popularitě a oblibě vždy rychle rozebrána, stejně jako jeho poslední vydání před dvaceti lety. Autoři se proto domnívají, že tato publikace je pro topografickou anatomii stále platným a užitečným přínosem, a rozhodli se proto pro revizi a opětovné aktualizované vydání původního textu. Toto nové „oživené“ vydání obsahuje aktualizaci anglické i latinské terminologie (Terminologia Anatomica, Thieme, Stuttgart, New York, 1998), digitálně zpracované grafy a obrázky a menší úpravy v původním textu.
