Metaphern stellen sprachlich einen wesentlichen Bestandteil religiöser Rede und Literatur dar und sind kulturell ein entscheidender Indikator für das Selbst- und Weltverständnis der sie gebrauchenden Träger- und Adressatenkreise. In Metaphern spiegeln sich Gottes-, Menschen- und Weltbilder. Gleichzeitig prägen Metaphern mittels ihrer je eigenen Kontexte, die sie bei der Übertragung einbringen, die Rede von Gott und vom Menschen, sie zwingen ihre Adressaten aufgrund ihrer Bildhaftigkeit und ihrer symbolimmanenten Mehrdeutigkeit zu interpretatorischer Mitarbeit, sie verändern die Wirklichkeitswahrnehmung und setzen damit auch gezielt Handlungen frei. Die in diesem Band gesammelten Aufsätze analysieren den Gebrauch, die Funktion und die Struktur von Metaphern in ausgewählten jüdischen Schriften aus hellenistisch-römischer Zeit, einschließlich der Werke Philos und der Texte aus Qumran, sowie in apokryphen frühchristlichen Texten und Inschriften.

Metaphors are a vital linguistic component of religious speech and serve as a cultural indicator of how groups understand themselves and the world. The essays compiled in this volume analyze the use, function, and structure of metaphors in Jewish writings from the Hellenistic-Roman period (including the works of Philo and the texts of Qumran), as well as in apocryphal early Christian texts and inscriptions.
