High fertility and the high demand for children are reflected in Sub-Saharan Africa's rapid rate of population growth, at 3.2 percent a year. Recent surveys reveal that women's "ideal family size" ranges from six to nine children, despite important advances in the provision of family planning and the implementation of population control policies in most countries. This paper examines the role of female schooling in determining levels of fertility and contraceptive use. The research results show that increasing female schooling will have a significant impact on the lowering of fertility and the spread of contraceptive use.
