Summary:
"During Rolph Scarlett's remarkable seventy-five year career he was an avant-garde abstract painter, an innovative set designer, an industrial designer, and the creator of unique sculptural jewelry in the American modernist tradition. In this illustrated book, based on a research journey that required both biographical investigation and locating his work in Canada and the United States, Judith Nasby presents the first critical retrospective of his life and work." "Scarlett was born in Guelph, Ontario, in 1889. By the time he moved to the United States in 1918 he already had some experience with painting, making jewelry, and designing for the stage -which he put to good use in New York. Throughout the 1930's and 1940's Scarlett was a leading practitioner of geometric abstraction. His streamlined modern industrial designs for everything from household objects to the New York World's Fair amusement rides emphasized efficiency, science, and progress. Sculptural jewellery increasingly became his focus and after his retirement in the 1960's he actively made jewellery until a few years before his death at ninety-five."--BOOK JACKET.
