- Summary:
- An attempt to combine the solid, weighty review and the entertaining and miscellaneous magazine, it served as an interpreter of the "West" to the East and as a recorder of the culture of the new region. The magazine championed morals, and presented a good deal of religious material, poetry, and critical reviews, but very little on politics. Three-fourths of all material was supplied by the editor, and at the beginning all of it was written by him, including the occasional romantic and sentimental tales which made up the magazine's only fiction. Selected material appeared increasingly toward the latter part of the publication's existence.
