- Summary:
- Published by the Pennsylvania Prison Society in Philadelphia [also called the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons], this magazine explored prison conditions and promoted prison reform [throughout the United States and often other countries as well]. Its articles and reports dealt with conditions and discipline in prisons, and with the best methods of conducting prisons and treating prisoners. It included descriptions, many accompanied by pictures and diagrams, of penitentiaries and other institutions, as well as surveys of the prisons in various states and foreign countries. Other social problems-- juvenile delinquency, pauperism, insanity, and drunkenness-- were also given coverage. (Cf. American Periodical Series Online, 1740-1900).
