Summary:
The western literary magazines were begun for the most part to bring gracious living into the harsh environment, and Wellman's Miscellany was one of the first of these to be successful. Its stated purpose was to furnish in a cheap form a literature calculated to develop the mind, and advance it in knowledge and virtue.
