Summary:
The article presents the text of the papal bull "Inter caetera" of May 4, 1493, which defined the line of demarcation of future Spanish and Portuguese explorations. The message is authored by a bishop of the Catholic Church, addressed to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. The document emphasizes that the exploration of uncharted territory is a means by which the spread of Catholicism might be accomplished. Acknowledgments of the contributions of New World explorer Christopher Columbus are included. Guidelines are provided for determining the authority and jurisdiction over newly discovered lands. A rule is given against entering newly discovered territories for the purpose of trade without a permit. The author asserts that the Catholic Church maintains authority in the conduct of existing and future exploration of undiscovered territories.
