Summary:

The texts in this book analyse the representations of politics and the media in contemporary democratic societies. The first part of the work is dedicated to the cognitive and rhetorical aspects of journalism and its influence on audiences. Next, the meanings of democracy and the role of journalism in the constitution of democratic societies and in the expansion of citizenship rights are examined. The final part of the book deals with the place occupied by the media in the Brazilian elections of 1989, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006. Combining theoretical reflection and analysis of concrete situations, this work highlights the connections between representations, journalism and democracy.
