Summary:
Institutes and cultural centers developed from the 1920s and formed the basis of France's international cultural relations. This present study focuses on the French Institute in Damascus from its creation in 1922 to its departure from the Palais Azem for the secular mission, boulevard de Bagdad, in 1946.Chronologically and then thematically, this study traces the major phases in the history of the Institute. The author examines its organization, its functioning, as well as its activities and the relational networks to which it belongs. It also evokes the place of the Institute within Orientalism and the human sciences while replacing the history of the Institute in that of the mandatory regime and its evolutions. This work is based on the archives of the Institute, in Damascus, the mandated archives (mainly those of the Service de l'Instruction Publique) and the archives of the Service of French Works Abroad, in Nantes.
