Summary:
Hans van Maanen sketches a history of the stage world, not of the stage. The production of drama plays a very important role in that world, of course, but the focus is mainly on the change in the distribution of theatre over the years. The role of the government - which continuously tries to monitor developments or to keep them manageable - is also highlighted. The author deals with the history of the theatre system in an analytical way and also pays attention to the most important bottlenecks of the contemporary system: the quality problem, the participation issue and the legitimation issue.
