The initial thematic concern - the occupation of new areas or, in the consecrated Anglo-Saxon expression, the moving border - which served as an entry point for a broader discussion, is linked to a research interest aroused under the influence of Dr. Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira and which I developed for several years under the Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology (hereinafter referred to as PPGAS) at the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Velho, 1967 e Velho, 1972).
