Notes:
Copies include a number of related press variants; cf. the two copies available via EEBO. In the Thomason copy Rushworth's signature on the title leaf is preceded by the formula "By the appointment of his Excellency, and the Generall Councel of Officers of the Army", with similar formulas on the last page and in a Rushworth signature on p. 26 (at the end of the Agreement); the heading on p. 3 ends "under his Command." In the Union Theological Seminary copy the reference to HIs Excellency is removed from the Rushworth signatures, and the Rushworth signature is omitted altogether on p. 26; the heading on p. 3 is ends " ... under his Command, concerning the Draught of An Agreement of the People, by them framed and prepared."
Copies may be accompanied by a separately printed leaf, containing a reply by the Speaker and the order to print this Petition, beginning "Die Sabbathi; 20, Januarii. 1649. Lieutenant General Hammond ... ", i.e. ESTC R179703 / Wing (2nd ed.) L1979A (entered as title "Lieutenant General Hammond ... ") / Thomason E.539[3] (not found in Thomason catalogue, though evidently bound immediately following the Thomason copy of this edition of the Petition). Of this there are at least two editions: one with the 4th line from end of text ending "And I do, in their Name," (in EEBO, Thomason E.539[3]/Wing L1979A as a separate item); and another with the same line ending "And I do, in their name, give" (in EEBO with Wing F213, facing the title leaf of the Union Theological Seminary copy of the Petition).
Signatures: A-D⁴.
Errors in pagination: in Thomason copy, 25-30 misprinted as 23-28, 31-32 as 28-29; in Union Theological Seminary copy, 26 misprinted as 27, 27 as 26.
Title within border of type ornaments.
Woodcut initials and head-piece.
ESTC notes (Aug. 2012): "Variant 1 (intermediate): title page has "By the appointment of his Excellency, and the Generall Councel of Officers of the Army."; pagination is [2], 24, 23-28, 28-29"; "P. 26 is not signed by John Rushworth. Variant 2 (earliest): title page and pagination as in variant 1; page 26 is signed by John Rushworth. Other variations on pages 3, 6, and 29". The "intermediate" variant probably represents of mixture of sheets containing earlier and later press variants.
RBC copy is ESTC variant 2. Title page has "By the appointment of his Excellency, and the Generall Councel of Officers of the Army." (with similar formulas on the last page and in the Rushworth signature on p. 26). Pagination is [2], 24, 23-28, 28-29. The heading on p. 3 ends "under his Command." Copy is bound with the separately printed leaf beginning "Die Sabbathi; 20, Januarii. 1649. Lieutenant General Hammond ... "; cf. bibliographic record for Die Sabbathi, 20 Januarii 1649. Lieutenant General Hammond, Colonel Okey, and other officers of the army, this day presented a petition to the House, with a draught of The agreement of the people. [London : s.n., 1649].
