Summary:
"[Operatic director] Stefan Herheim ... superimposes the modern over the traditional in this ... new version of Puccini's La bohème. Freedom, love, and even death all demand a price that must be paid and the opera opens with Mimi dying of cancer in a modern intensive care unit; the overture begins just after the ECG machine displays its unmistakable flat green line. To escape the reality of Mimi's death Rodolfo remembers their life together, and the familiar story of the bohemians begins. As the spectre of Death haunts the scenes, Rodolfo's bohemian companions, including Musetta, are simultaneously their traditional selves as well as the doctors and hospital personnel in the modern world"--Container.
