Biography/History:

Born in Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Jacob and Mary Margaret Shelly. William A. Shelly attended the Lititz Academy for Boys. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. in 1840. Shelly was a practicing physician in Lancaster County. He married Thamar S. and they had at least five children.

Summary:

A slim ruled notebook with yellow covers and printed design. This notebook consisting of medical vocabulary was written by W. A. Shelly in 1835 probably as a study guide for medical school. Entries listed in the volume are mostly in Latin and consist terms regarding medicinal remedies, plants, some ailments and diseases. Following each entry is a definition or explanation written in English. The notes cover medical problems ranging from arthritis to elephantiasis to vertigo. Examples of botanical entries include medicinal uses for belladonna, hen bane, pomegranate, and wild lettuce. Mixtures using acids, minerals, and alkalies are also noted. Many of the notes in the volume have citations from the The dispensatory of the United States of America by George B. Wood and Franklin Bache. Some entries are attributed to physicians. The last page of the volume is written in German. W. A. Shelly is written on the front and back covers and throughout the volume. The detached covers have printed borders, small vignettes, and verse.
