Summary:
In present study, I examined maternal involvements in educational and leisure activities and their relations with child adjustment in rural and urban Chinese children using a one-year longitudinal design. I also investigated whether child gender and initial adjustment status moderated the relations. Participants included 202 children (103 boys, 99 girls) in one urban school and 215 children (111 boys, 104 girls) in four rural schools in third grade at Time 1. One hundred and seventy-four children from the urban school (83 boys, 91 girls) and 184 from the rural schools (93 boys, 91 girls) participated in the follow-up study. Data were collected from multiple sources at both time points. Children were asked to report the frequencies of mothers' involvements in educational and leisure activities. Peer nominations and teacher rating were used to assess children's social functioning. Self-reports were used to measure children's school attitude, self-perceptions, and loneliness. Information on children's school status and academic achievement was obtained from school records. The results showed that Time 1 maternal educational involvement was positively related to Time 2 school status and school attitude. Maternal educational involvement at Time 1 was also positively related to peer victimization at Time 2 for those who were highly victimized at Time 1 in the urban sample; the association was not significant in the rural sample. Time 1 maternal involvement in leisure activities was positively related to Time 2 self-worth and negatively related to Time 2 loneliness in the urban sample, and positively related to Time 2 teacher-rated social competence in the rural sample. Interaction analyses showed that Time 1 maternal involvement in leisure activities was negatively associated with Time 2 loneliness for children who were high on loneliness at Time 1 in the urban sample. Time 1 maternal involvement in leisure activities was also negatively related to Time 2 aggression for initially aggressive children in the rural sample. For girls who were low on academic achievement and high on peer victimization at Time 1, maternal involvement in leisure activities were related to more learning and victimization problems one year later; the association was opposite for boys.
