Summary:
Women and girls' contact with the justice system is often influenced by false gender related assumptions and stereotypes. There are a number of concerns specific to the mental health of women and girls as they move through the system, ranging from how the courts respond to domestic violence or experiences of sex trafficking, to how women are treated while in prison, to whether probation and parole officers view them as likely to be unfit mothers. Gender, Psychology, and Justice draws on psychological research to examine how gender in fluences one's experience of the criminal justice system. The volume demonstrates how, from initial contact with justice and court officials, gender intersects with race, class, and sexual orientation to impact legal status and well-being. It also explains the role psychology car play in shaping legal policy, including in the areas of corrections, family court, and drug court. The book showcases the ramifications of poor policies and offers suggestions for best practices for working with women and girls in legal settings based on the existing psychological research.
