Relive the Conditions Inside Britain's Most Notorious Gaol, Meet the Stars - the Condemned Men and Women Who were the Celebrities of their Day, Discover How Burning Down Newgate Brought Britain to the Brink of Revolution, From the Pillory to Solitary Confinement, Discover the Most Feared Punishments of All, Pike with the Rum-Padders into Deusaville and Learn the Language of Thieves, London's Newgate Gaol is probably best known today from the novels of Charles Dickens, however, there is much is more to it than nineteenth century notoriety. As the place where prisoners, male and female, awaited trial, execution or transportation it was England's most feared gaol for over 700 years. Among its most famous prisoners were the author and spy Daniel Defoe, the playwright Ben Jonson and the pirate Captain Kidd. In the eighteenth century the thief Jack Sheppard became the talk of the town for his daring escapes. This book takes you from its twelfth century origins to its final closure in the early twentieth century. It charts the major events in Newgate's history and life within its walls to reveal the gaol's key role in the development of the English penal system. Book jacket.
