Summary:
The aim of this book is to familiarize the reader with the concept of electromagnetic time reversal, and introduce up-to-date applications of the concept found in the areas of electromagnetic compatibility and power systems. It is original in its approach to describing propagation and transient issues in power networks and power line communication, and is the result of the three main editors' pioneering research in the area. The time-reversal technique has emerged as a hot topic with many potential applications to engineering, essentially in the field of acoustics, where it was first developed by Professor Matthias Fink (a contributor to this book) and his team in the 1990s. In the past decode, the technique has been applied to electromagnetics and electrical and computer engineering, with particularly successful results in EMC and power systems protection. However, despite this broad application, the technique remains relatively unknown in the wider EE community and, to this end, this book is the first to provide an overview of the technique and its applications to EMC and power systems. It provides a theoretical foundation of the electromagnetic time-reversal theory, beginning with an introductory chapter on the theoretical basis, moving on to applications including EMC measurements, EM field focusing and amplification, mitigation of interference in power line communications, lightning location, and fault location in power systems. This innovative book introduces the concept of time reversal in a completely original way. It discusses a pioneering theory with applications to EMC, power systems, power line communications, lightning detection, fault location, and smart grids. The three editors are renowned international experts in this field: in 2008 they initiated pioneering research activity in the application of electromagnetic time reversal to lightning defection and fault detection in power systems, resulting in a patent on fault detection in power networks.
