Summary:
The Eucharistic monstrance (or ostensorium) appears in the second half of the thirteenth century to meet the changing expectations of the congregation. This book looks at the conditions at its appearance, discusses its structural and iconographic look, and questions the different uses of liturgical vessel, between "simple" reliquary of the consecrated host and propaganda tool in the context of the Counter-Reformation.
