Discusses significance of dark pools, a type of alternative trading system in which a broker-dealer matches stock trading orders of multiple buyers and sellers outside of exchanges in order to conceal large trading interests. Examines factors that led to the rise of dark pools as well as potential benefits and costs of such trading.
