Biography/History:
Born to John and Jane Howe Snyder on December 9, 1836 in McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Snyder prepared for college in Mercersburg under the tutalage of Rev. John R. Kooken. In 1857 he entered Franklin and Marshall College and graduated with an A.M. with an oration honor in 1861. Following college Snyder attended the Theological Seminary at Mercersburg and graduated in 1863. He immediately received a poisition in Akron, Ohio where he served for eleven months. In December 1864 he became pastor of the Salem Reformed Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he served until 1886. Synder married Mary Naomi Erisman (1842-1913) on April 20, 1865. The couple had two children Mary and John Paul.
Summary:
This volume contains medicinal recipes and formulas compiled by W. H. H. Snyder. On the first page of the volume is a list of poisons with their antidotes. Following this page are various recipes on fifty-eight numbered pages including medicinal remedies, toiletries, and a few veterinary remedies for horses. Medicinal recipes for drops, elixirs, essences, liniments, ointments, powders, salves, syrups, and tinctures provide cures and remedies for ailments and illnesses such as ague, antispasmodics, burns, colds, corns, coughs, cramps, deafness, gonorrhea, hydrophobia, hysterics, paralysis, rheumatism, ring bone, scratches, sore eyes, sprains, and toothaches. There are several recipes with attributions such as Anderson Scott's pills, Bailey's itch ointment, Godfrey's cordial, Hooper's female pills, Lady Webster's pills, and Thompsonian compositions. Recipes for toiletries include colognes, hair dyes, lip salves, Russian cosmetics, shaving soaps, and tooth powders. Some household recipes included in the volume are for inks, soaps, varnishes, and one to create artificial mahogany. Following page fifty-eight are numbered pages 73-79. An index included at the end of the volume refers to recipes following page 58 suggesting pages 59-72 are lacking. "Popular receipts" is written in ink on the front cover. The inside front cover has a small clipping pasted in entitled "Good health." Signatures in pencil of Snyder's children, Mary and John Paul, are on the inside front cover. A recipe for Snyder Cake is at the end of the index.
