In even poëtische als kritische installaties presenteert zij hoopvolle alternatieven voor ecologische vernietiging als gevolg van (over)consumptie en materialistisch gewin. In de toekomst kan alles beter worden ? maar ook slechter. Houkema heeft gestudeerd aan de Gerrit Rietveld academie en was een research-resident aan de Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, El Eco Museo Experimental Mexico City, ViaFarini in Milan, en het Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlijn.
