Biography/History:

Edwin Ewart Aubrey was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1918. In 1919, he earned his Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Bucknell University. He continued his education at the University of Chicago, earning his Master of Arts in 1921, his Bachelor of Divinity in 1922, and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1926. Aubrey went on to teach at Carleton College, Miami University of Ohio, Vassar College and the University of Chicago. In 1944, Aubrey became the president of Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania. He remained at Crozer until 1949, when he became professor and chairman of the Department of Religious Thought at the University of Pennsylvania, a position in which he served until his death in 1956. Simon Patrick was an English theologian and bishop who entered Queens' College Cambridge in 1644. He was the dean of Peterborough in 1679 and Bishop of Chichester in 1689. That same year, he was employed, along with several other bishops, to settle the affairs of the Church of Ireland. In 1691, he was translated to the see of Ely, where he remained until his death in 1707. Patrick is known for his influential sermons and devotional writings.

This collection contains the notes and papers regarding Edwin E. Aubrey's Fulbright Scholarship application for the research of the life and works of English theologian and bishop, Simon Patrick. There is a series of bibliographical note slips that are partially organized by phases of Patrick's life. There is also a copy of Aubrey's Fulbright Scholarship application, including his proposal, titled "The Theology of Simon Patrick (1626-1707)," and what appears to be a hand written resume. This collection also contains Aubrey's notes on Simon Patrick, including lists titled, "contemporary authors," "dates of published works," "life and writings," and "works in chronological order." Finally, there are several reader request slips from Princeton University, the Huntington Library, and the University of Pennsylvania. Aubrey died before this proposal came up for consideration.
