Summary:
In 1945, shortly after Korea gains independence from Japan, officers from the Workers' Party of Korea confiscate landowners' property in the village of Pyongan-do Yangjigol.
"Pyeongan-do Yangigol, the next year of liberation. A group of officers from the Workers' Party of Korea arrives at the village. Mr. Choe, who left the village 6 years ago, leaving behind his wife, Ojaknyeo, arrives with them. These officers bring down the sign board of the village school established by Park Hun, the son of a revered landowner, and initiate land reform. The elderly Do-seop, a peasant farmer of Park Hun's family, spearheads the movement for bringing down the landowners. Ojaknyeo, daughter of Do-seop, exerts herself to the utmost for Park Hun, and is bedridden at the hands of her father. Officers from the Workers' Party and villagers confiscate properties of landowners, and accuse Park Hun of enticing a married woman. Park Hun makes his mind up to go down to the South with his cousin Hyeok, and Ojaknyeo. Losing his father during the land reform, Hyeok resorts to [attempt] killing Do-seop, who once saved his own life, to stop Do-seop's madness. Park Hun decides to take of Do-seop instead of Hyeok. After tussling with Park Hun, Do-seop finaly regains his calmness and asks Park Hun to take his daugther with him."--Container.
