Summary:
Neither in Dark Speeches nor in Similitudes is an interdisciplinary collaboration of Canadian and American Jewish studies scholars who compare and contrast the experience of Jews in Canada and the United States along a chronological spectrum (ca. 1763 to the present). Problematizing national orthodoxies and prevailing understandings, the contributors to this important volume show how factors such as religious observance, immigration, language, geography, national cultures, community values, and even illness shaped the Jewish communities on either side of our common border, as well as how those communities grew to differ - or not - as a consequence. This collection equips Canadian and American Jewish studies scholars to broaden their examination and ask new questions, as well as answer old questions based on fresh comparative data. Book jacket.
