- Biography/History:
- Thomas Place, a civil engineer, and Louisa Sharp were married on December 20, 1833 in Middlesex, London at St. Botolph Aldgate. They lived in Calcutta, India from 1834 to 1847. Thomas died on August 17, 1847 at Fort William in Calcutta. Louisa returned to England and lived Chelsea, Middlesex County with her daughters, where she served as a boardinghouse keeper.
- Summary:
- One letter dated May 13, 1835 from Louisa and Thomas Place to Louisa's mother, Mrs. Charles Sharp care of William Shuttleworth, Hornchurch, Essex, England. The first two pages are written by Louisa Place discussing her brothers and daughter. The third page is written by Thomas Place discussing the heat in India, his wife, who he refers to a "Lou" and Mr. Shuttleworth in Essex. The second leaf is torn in the center and on the right edge with some script lacking.
