- Summary:
- Bound collection of seven documents and letters written by or relating to members of four generations of the family of William Penn, founder and proprietor of Pennsylvania. The volume has a title page for the collection as a whole. Most of the documents are mounted on hinges; the 1729 indenture, which is on parchment, is mounted in the volume folded but can be unfolded. The documents are arranged in chronological order, providing examples of the signature of Admiral William Penn, father of William Penn, 1667; the signature and seal of William Penn, 1681; a letter in the hand of Hannah Callowhill Penn, second wife of William Penn, 1718; the signature and seal of Springett Penn, grandson of William Penn, 1729; the signature and seal of Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, 1739; the signature of Richard Penn, grandson of William Penn, 1773; and the signature of Richard Penn, grandson of William Penn, 1787. Except for the first letter signed by Admiral William Penn, all the documents are related to property in Pennsylvania or Delaware. Bound after 1916 in crushed red morocco with marbled endpapers by H. Zucker, Philadelphia, with the initials A.B.J. in gilt at the bottom of the right cover.
