- Summary:
- Political Philosophy and the Challenge of Revealed Religion sets out to determine political philosophy as a philosophic concept and to test it face to face with the challenge posed by revealed religion. It is guided by the insight that philosophy must prove its right and its necessity in confrontation with the most powerful objection that can be raised against it. The book contains three chapters and an Appendix: The introductory chapter asks "Why Political Philosophy?" The second and third chapters are extended essays, "On the Intention of Leo Strauss's Thoughts on Machiavelli" and "On the Intention of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Of the Social Contract." The appendix makes available for the first time the headings Leo Strauss wrote for each paragraph of Thoughts on Machiavelli. Book jacket.
