Summary:
This is the story of how an ordinary bloke from the bush launched a movement that would change the character of Australia's towns and cities, and bring about lasting political and legislative reform. This is the story of the house that Jack Mundey built. If it were not for the green ban movement of the 1970s, Sydney and many other cities would today look very different. Mundey's efforts in pulling together an unlikely alliance of conservationists, unions, professional bodies and ordinary citizens earned him a reputation as "both the best-known unionist and best-known conservationist in Australia'. Jack was an inspirational leader in the fight against the slash and-burn philosophy of the 160s and 1970s which almost saw. The Rocks in Sydney transformed into a high-rise commercial and residential zone, a motorway through the centre of Glebe and an Olympic stadium in Centennial Park. In this long-awaited book, James Colman reflects on Mundey's remarkable life and his ongoing legacy. Book jacket.
