- Summary:
- The widespread use of mobile Internet coupled with the advent of numerous smart applications has led to an explosive growth in mobile data traffic, demanding more capacity from mobile operators' networks. This momentum will continue to surge as next generation applications will not only be about connecting people, but machines and devices, leading to the so-called 'Internet of Everything'. As a result, the current and projected growth in mobile data traffic paves the way for fifth generation (5G) mobile communications technology and the hyper-dense deployment of small cells as a vehicle for delivering high-speed connectivity on a wide-area basis. This will lead to new research challenges in terms of the communication haul, requiring a high-speed and cost-effective communication pipe that is able to conned the core network to the radio access network - referred to as backhauling - and the radio access network to the end users through fronthauling. This book brings together mobile stakeholders from academia and industry to identify and promote technical challenges and recent results related to smart backhaul/fronthaul research for future communication systems such as 5G. It considers already available topologies for the communication haul and explains all the fundamental requirements for deploying smart and efficient future backhauling/fronthauling infrastructure from architectural, technical and business points of view while also presenting future candidate solutions. The book: Explains all the fundamental requirements for deploying a fronthaul-based network from architectural, technical and business points of view and presents real-life applications case studies, examples, illustrations and mathematical equations to support the analysis of the proposed protocols. Outlines the standardization activities of backhauling/fronthauling, updating the research community on the current roadmap as new features emerge for consideration in 3GPP. Provides a useful reference guide for graduate students and researchers working in this dynamic field in terms of understanding the present and future trends in backhauling and fronthauling technology as we head towards the era of 5G.
