Summary:
Ever since the Rastafari movement originated in Jamaica in the 1930s, Rastafari have been calling for a return to Ethiopia with cries of "Repatriation is a must!" The East African country is considered sacred to the Rastafari, who see themselves as returning members of an Ethiopian diaspora, and repatriation as fundamental to their beliefs. Ethiopians, however, see the Rastafari as immigrants. Unlike most migration movements, Rastafari repatriation is based on spiritual rather than economic motivations. In Visions of Zion, Erin C. MacLeod offers the first in-depth investigation into how Ethiopians perceive Rastafari in Ethiopia and the role this unique immigrant community plays within Ethiopian society. This volume offers those who study the Rastafari movement a broader understanding of the implications of repatriation. With consideration of the Ethiopian perspective, it argues that migrant and diaspora identities are the products of negotiation. This look at a unique migration movement to a non-Western country fills a gap in the broader immigration studies literature. Book jacket.
