Summary:
This edited volume brings together leading proponents of psychological therapies for people with intellectual disabilities. The chapters provide key information and guidance on the nature and prevalence of psychological and mental health problems, delivery of treatment, the effectiveness of treatment, and the relationship of mental health and emotional problems to social deprivation and general health issues in this population.
Contributions cover the preparation of clients for therapy, adjusting the methods of treatment to suit the client group, and working with families and carers to broaden interventions beyond the therapeutic dyad. In addition, chapters encompass interventions for a number of key psychological and emotional problems including anxiety disorders, depression, psychosis, anger, sexual deviance, and autistic spectrum disorders. While there is an emphasis on cognitive behavioural therapies, other approaches including mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy and behavioural intervention are also discussed. Each section contains case examples to illustrate and guide the assessment and treatment processes.
This book is valuable for all psychological therapists, health professionals, clinical and social care staff dealing with the difficulties experienced by people with intellectual disabilities, as well as researchers and students interested in developing their knowledge and skills in this area. It is also useful for others who have day-to-day involvement with clients with intellectual disabilities and their families. Book jacket.
