Summary:
Playing Fair offers both practical and theoretical strategies to teachers interested in creating learning environments that promote independent problem solving, sound decision making, and effective team play. Students learn a host of other skills, strategies, and concepts that can transfer not only to other games but also to other situations in life. This text takes the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) approach to a new level incorporating group processes and democratic behaviors that develop students' personal growth as well as their ability to function and thrive in group situations. Playing Fair offers teachers these benefits: Practical classroom stories showing teachers how a theory works in real life and how it can be applied to students in their own contexts, Activities that include modifications so teachers can apply the games to students of all ages and abilities, Learning checks consisting of questions for teachers to ask their students in order to assess their learning of the concepts, Key Concepts, a special element that calls out important concepts for readers, Learners will better understand the constructs of game play, and they will be able to transfer the concepts, tactics, and skills among game categories. The TGfU approach will help students be more engaged, improve their performance, and become more self-effective and empowered. In addition, they will learn firsthand how democracy works from the bottom up. Book jacket.
