"In 1797, the French administration began an anti-Catholic campaign in retaliation for supposed clerical involvement in civil unrest in the Ardennes area. This began with the immediate deportation of 7,000 Belgian priests for refusing to swear an oath of hatred against royalty, the banning of ecclesiastical dress and arrest of 1,000 clerics. This rare document forms graphically illustrates the events, ordering the deportation of Martin de Bast and immediate transfer to Rochefort for embarkation for deportation."--vendor's description.
