Biography/History:
Griscom was one of six children born to Philadelphia shipping executive Clement Acton Griscom (1841-1912) and Frances Canby Biddle (1840-1923). He was educated in Switerzerland and Germany. Griscom attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the Wharton School of Political Economy with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1887. He started work in the shipping industry, becoming manager of the International Navigation Company and of the International Mercantile Company. Griscom was also director of the Maritime Association Port of New York. He also served as manager and director of many other companies throughout his career. He belonged to many clubs, museums, and institutions in Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey. In 1889 Griscom married Genevieve Sprigg Ludlow and had three children. The Griscoms had two boys, Ludlow (1890-1959) and Acton (1891-1961), and a girl, Joyce (1893-1897), who died in childhood.
Summary:
This photograph album comprises portrait photographs from the University of Pennsylvania class of 1887 compiled by Clement Acton Griscom. Written on the inside cover is "professors and members of class of '87, University of Pennsylvania." There are two postcard-size, sepia-toned photographs mounted in each page. The name of each person is written on the border above the portrait. The photographs have been slipped into the album through a slit near the bottom of the page. There are forty-four portrait photographs in the album consisting of the Penn Provost Pepper and Dean Kendall followed by twelve professors and forty-seven graduates. Portraits of three students including Clement Acton Griscom are lacking.
