Summary:
The political landscape of U.S. presidential elections has undergone a profound transformation over the past four decades: a number of formerly competitive states now clearly favor either Democratic Or Republican candidates; a number of states that used to favor one party are now battleground states; other states have intensified their attachment to the Democratic or Republican party; and a handful of states have hardly changed at all. Some of these changes have been offering, but the net effects favor Democratic Party interests. Moving beyond simple notions of red states and blue states, this book provides an important analysis of changes in state political tendencies over time. Altered States offers a systematic accounting of this transformation, pointing to shifting demographics as the key to understanding political change. It explores the connections between changes in state demographics and changes in party support, time. It also looks at the way in which elite partisan polarization has strengthened the relationship between demographic characteristics and party support in the states. Altered States is a fascinating and sweeping picture of the forces that create political change in the United States. Book jacket.
