Compiled by an unknown writer at the request of the Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, to whom the work was formerly ascribed. Based mainly on a collection made in the 6th or 7th century by Cassianus Bassus, who borrowed from two earlier writers, Anatolius Vindanius or Vindonius, of Berytus, and Didymus, of Alexandria (both of the 4th or 5th century).
