This volume, the first English translation of Maine de Biran in nearly a century, introduces Anglophone readers to the work of this seminal thinker. From Ravaisson and Bergson through to Merleau-Ponty, Henry, and Ricoeur Biran enormous influence on French philosophy is evident, not least his impact on the distinction between the virtual and the actual, and the concepts of effort and puissance, key to both Deleuze and Foncault's work.
