Biography/History:
Publisher located in London, England founded in 1851 by linguist Nicholas Trübner (1817-1884). Trübner & Co. published chiefly scholarly works. Trübner owned and managed the publishing house from 1851 to 1884.
Summary:
An invoice with a list of books and a declaration statement for exportation dated May 8, 1878. The items were shipped from Trübner & Co., London, England to John Penington & Son, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The invoice has approximately sixty-three titles and lists the quantity, title, date, and price for each book or magazine shipped. The books span the dates from 1517 to 1878 and range in a variety of subjects including, classics, religion, science, medicine, fishing and traveling. Affixed to the invoice by the seal of consulate-general of the United States is a printed declaration avowing the books are being exported to Philadelphia and proper duties have been incurred. The form is signed by Josiah Child (1831-1913), a bookseller for Trübner, and consulate-general Joshua Nunn. On a third sheet is the a stamped seal of the Port of Philadelphia dated May 20, 1878.
