- Summary:
- This book presents a study of the morphology and syntax of the two major Romance Languages spoken in Latin America, and in particular, on the subtle variation between them. It charts their evolution from their Iberian precursors, offering empirical and theoretical windows to general language variation and change. Essays compare Brazilian Portuguese with European Portuguese; Latin American Spanish and Peninsular Spanish. The papers advance numerous theoretical questions related to, among other topics, coordination, hyper-raising, infinitives, quantifiers, pseudo-clefts, distributed morphology. This is an invaluable tool for all future work in Portuguese, Spanish, and their Latin-American varieties. Book jacket.
