Summary:
Following a tumultuous revolution and in the face of a years-long war, a new vision of cinema redefined what it meant to make a film in Iran in the 1980s. The Iranian film industry faced rules and regulations that had been developed under the newly established Islamic Republic. Yet beginning in the 1990s, the film industry and a reformist movement led by Mohammad Khatami forged an unlikely partnership that moved audiences away from revolutionary ideas and toward a discourse of reform. In Reform Cinema in Iran Blake Atwood examines how new industrial and aesthetic practices responded to political movements to create a distinct moment in Iran's film history. He provides new readings of such films as Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry (1997) and Mohsen Makhmalbaf's Time for Love (1990) as well as works by other key Iranian directors. At the same time, he analyzes political speeches, religious sermons and newspaper editorials and pays attention to technological developments, particularly the rise of video to determine their role in democratizing filmmaking and realizing the goals of political reform. Atwood concludes by examining the legacy of reform cinema and argues for the continued relevance of media and media technologies in the pursuit of political change. Book jacket.
