Summary:
Ella Flagg Young, a lesbian educator/suffragist who put sexualities on the public school map, was the inspiration for this anthology. In introducing this collection of 36 chapters, Meiners (education and women's studies, Northeastern Illinois U.) and Quinn (art education, School of the Art Institute of Chicago) relate Young's work to contemporary issues of "the hidden sexuality curriculum," queer pedagogy, and liberation politics. Themes include debates over and new ideas in sex education, teachers' holistic identity in pedagogy, anti-discrimination education, barriers to research on sexualities in the schools, and queer directions in interdisciplinary research. The volume includes some international perspectives, illustrations, poems, and a resource guide for educators. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
