Biography/History:
Horace Parker was born on November 16, 1815 to Theodore and Hannah (Gunnison) Parker in Kittery, York County, Maine. Parker received his education at local public schools and graduated from the Berwick Academy in 1833. The same year Parker began teaching at the age of eighteen in the school districts of Kittery, Berkwick, and Barnsted, Maine. After 1839 Parker attended Bowdoin College and graduated in 1845. He then taught for two years at Eliot Academy in York County. In 1848 Parker became an assistant purser for the United States Navy Yard in Kittery where he worked for twelve years. Following his work at the navy yard Parker devoted the rest of his life to teaching in the Eliot schools. He later became principal of the York County Free High School, was superintendent of the Eliot schools, and held other town offices until 1895. Parker married Abigail Leighton Fogg (1814-1899) on September 17, 1856. They had one son Horace Theodore in 1857 who died in infancy.
