Summary:
At the turn of the millennium, Guatemala experienced a Mayan cultural renaissance known as the Maya Movement. One aspect of this movement was the revitalization of indigenous Mayan languages for written purposes, including the introduction of a new standardized alphabetic system for each of the twenty-two Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala as well as the incorporation of ancient elements. This case study, conducted in the Guatemalan highlands, investigates Mayan literacy in publications and media as well as its practice in the school system and among Maya people. The author examines the concept of literary and the promises and pitfalls of literary revitalization. Book jacket.
