Biography/History:

Born in 1785 Gallagher owned a wholesale and retail store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 2nd Street between Race and Arch Streets. He sold an assortment of merchandise including fabrics, hats, linens, lace, buttons, paper, and horse whips. He had one daughter, Elizabeth.

Summary:

This oblong leather bound volume is a receipt book kept by Philadelphia merchant Peter Gallagher during and after the American Revolutionary War spanning the years from 1776 to 1785. The volume comprises the receipts of payments made by Gallagher to various Philadelphia merchants including auction houses. Some payments are for rent. Each payment has been recorded, dated, and signed by the recipient. Some Philadelphia merchants of note include Footman and Jeyes, William Sitgreaves, Bache & Shee, Cuthbert Landers, and notary Peter Lohra. Additionally, several Jewish merchants appear throughout volume. They include Jonas Phillips (1736-1803), whose signature appears in some instances with Enoch Lyon in the years from 1776-1778; trader Bernard Gratz (1738-1801); Isaac Judah (1761-1827); Benjamin Mendes Seixas (1747-1817) merchant and a founder of the New York Stock Exchange; Manuel Josephson (1729-1796); Solomon Marache (circa 1746-1819) of importing company Marache and Spencer; Moses Judah (1735-1822); and Solomon Aaron. A 1785 entry recorded toward the end of the volume lists payments made by the estate of Peter Gallagher. There are six receipts laid in the volume. The volume is written parallel to the spine in the manner of a notepad.
