Summary:
The tropics and subtropics are home to about 75% of the global human population. Cultural, economic, and political circumstances vary enormously across this vast geography of some 170 countries and territories. The region not only harbors the world's poorest countries with human populations growing disproportionally faster than other areas but also contains an astonishing biodiversity: some 90% of plant, animal, and insect species of the planet. Tropical Conservation: Perspectives on Local and Global Priorities addresses research, capacity building, and policy issues needed within the next decades in the tropics and subtropics. Authors A. Alonso Aguirre and Raman Sukumar, and their team of contributors-most of whom are working in this region-focus on the challenge of integrating environmental conservation more fully into local, national, and global development agendas. Climate change, terrorism, poverty, and emerging infectious diseases all capture the attention of governments, agencies, donors and the public worldwide, white biodiversity has declined as a priority. While these trends are likely to continue, in the past two decades a worldwide cadre of highly trained, respected, and effective conservation scientists and practitioners are growing in universities, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies. Tropical, mega diverse countries have been building scientific capacity and are becoming important players in increasing knowledge for conservation. Tropical Conservation has many case studies including significant success stories and collaborations of businesses with conservationists to protect and maintain biodiversity through a variety of innovative mechanisms. The book introduces important conservation concepts and illustrates their application as the authors directly capture real world experiences in their home countries in preventing biodiversity loss and sustaining ecological health. The book is intended to be a key resource on the biodiversity conservation crisis in the tropics and subtropics for university professors, students, researchers, and practitioners in government and civil society organizations.
