Summary:

Provides overview of U.S. egg industry, and reviews United Egg Producers and Humane Society agreement, which calls for Federal legislation that would regulate table egg production practices and hen welfare. Summarizes provisions of S. 820 and H.R. 1731, both the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2013; and H.R. 3798 and S. 3239, both the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012, all to establish uniform, national cage size requirements for table egg-laying hens by adding national standards for laying-hen housing; to include labeling requirements to disclose how eggs are produced; and to establish air quality, molting, and euthanasia standards for laying hens. Discusses supporting and opposing views of the bills, and addresses animal welfare issues for laying hens.
