Analyzes current civil war in Syria between forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad and rebel fighters opposed to his rule, and assesses status of both sides. Reviews recent developments tied to alleged chemical weapons attack and possible U.S. punitive military action if Assad refuses to hand over his chemical weapons arsenal to the international community. Discusses U.S. lethal military aid to elements of the armed opposition, prospects for a political settlement, status of Syrian political opposition, and role of Al Qaeda, extremism, and foreign fighters in armed insurgency. Reviews U.S. policy toward Syria since 2011, including issues relating to U.S. assistance. Includes appendices providing list of recent legislative activity, chronology of UN action, and information on U.S. sanctions against Syria.
